She has more than five years of experience providing comprehensive ophthalmologic care, including treatment for cataracts, glaucoma, diseases of the retina and vitreous, cornea, and neuro-ophthalmic diseases, most recently at Columbia Eye Clinic in Columbia, South Carolina.

She is also the first Black female ophthalmologist in the state.

Background

A native of West Columbia, South Carolina, Dr. Courtenay-Brown received bachelor’s degrees in biology and computer science from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida.

She then earned a doctoral degree in human genetics and genomics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Miami’s Hussman Institute of Human Genomics focusing on gene-environment interactions in age-related macular degeneration.

Dr. Courtenay-Brown went on to graduate from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and complete her ophthalmology residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
