About Dr. Westerkam

Dr. Westerkam provides care for conditions ranging from acute neck and back pain to chronic spine disorders and other chronic pain conditions.

Expertise

A member of the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, Dr. Westerkam has more than 22 years of experience treating patients with multiple neurologic and musculoskeletal conditions. He uses electrodiagnostic medicine and ultrasound to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.
 
He is triple board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, electrodiagnostic medicine and sports medicine with additional certification in musculoskeletal sonography. He is also an American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Fellow and an American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine Diplomat. 

Background

Dr. Westerkam graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He then completed research at Harvard Medical School in Boston and at Duke University Medical School, before graduating from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill. He continued his training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, where he also served as chief resident.
 
Dr. Westerkam has worked in private practice; consulted for the S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Prosthetic and Orthotic Program; served as director of Rehabilitation Medicine for Palmetto Health Trauma Service in Columbia, South Carolina, treating patients with multi-trauma, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries; and served as an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia.
